The Science behind our ingredients
At Maiiro, we have spent a great deal of time searching for ingredients that not only provide deep hydration and restore elasticity but combine these qualities with proven anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. Together with our very own blend of seaweeds and algae called Kelpogen5TM, we have specifically chosen Buriti, Tamanu and Tea Tree oil as our top picks, to arrive at the perfect natural skincare formulation.
From times immemorial, Mother Nature has provided us with an incredible range of plants that can be used for their unique and beneficial properties as either food, general health aid, and, of course, skincare. Our ancestors took full advantage of these and it was naturally a clean beauty time before man-made chemicals that now proliferate most of our products, such as sulphates, phthalates and parabens, to name but a few.
Today, modern science is finally recognising that the unique natural chemical properties of some of our ingredients really do work. In many instances better than the new synthetic alternatives. This has resulted in a growing body of scientific evidence, supporting what our ancestors took for granted – nature can provide us with everything we could possibly need to look well – without chemicals.
Going back to our list of top ingredients, Buriti oil (Mauritia flexuosa) has traditionally been used by the indigenous people of the southern Amazon in Brazil, for its medicinal qualities. The oil, extracted from the fruit of the Buriti palm contains exceptionally high levels of Beta-Carotene (vitamin A), Tocopherol (vitamin E) and Oleic acid, all of which are known to improve hydration and conditions of the epidermis and dermis. Protecting collagen and elastin, it is highly effective in reducing the effects of UV damage and significantly reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Tamanu oil, pressed from the fruit kernel of the Tamanu Nut Tree (Callophyllum inophyllum) has been used as a traditional medicine in the Pacific Islands for many centuries. Containing Oleic Acid, Linoleic Acid and Stearic Acid, its soothing properties have been used to treat anything from insect bites to more serious skin conditions such as acne, eczema and even psoriasis.
Simmonensia Chinensis or Jojoba oil was well known by native American tribes for its healing properties, where it was used to treat various skin disorders, as well as wounds and sores. Modern science has now also recognised its anti-inflammatory properties and various studies confirm its efficacy in conditions where the skin barrier has been affected, such as acne, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis and eczema.
Known individually for their unique skin repair qualities, these power packed ingredients are used in both our anti-ageing and anti-blemish creams. Blended into a luxurious, light and easily absorbed formulation, they represent the very best of nature’s, clean, green restorative power in a jar.
Rather than turning our back on progress and everything that 21st century science can do for us, we would believe that choosing natural skincare, based on real evidence, is the way forward. Ditching harsh chemical agents and artificial fragrances from our daily skincare routine, choosing non-toxic, ethically sourced ingredients instead surely must count as progress.
